Spectrum Cable Added Fees Class Action Lawsuit

A class‑action lawsuit was filed on June 4, 2025 against Spectrum Cable (Charter Communications). The suit challenges Spectrum’s $28‑per‑month “Broadcast TV Surcharge,” a fee added to customers’ bills to cover retransmission costs for local broadcast stations. According to the complaint, Spectrum markets the surcharge as a pass‑through charge imposed by local stations or the government, but the fee is actually discretionary—Spectrum has complete control over whether to charge it.

The suit alleges that actual retransmission fees are far lower than $28, so the surcharge includes undisclosed profits; if it were a true pass‑through, Spectrum would be paying broadcasters more than $33 million per year, which is unlikely.

The lawsuit contends that misrepresenting the surcharge deceives customers, violates consumer‑protection laws and leads to unfair billing practices.

Plaintiffs seek to represent a class of residents who subscribed to Spectrum cable TV (not internet‑only service) and paid the Broadcast TV Surcharge. Participants incur no cost unless the case succeeds, and the complaint demands refunds for customers and the elimination of the deceptive fee.
