Apple Accused of 'Bricking' Older Apple Watch Models

A lawsuit has been filed against Apple alleging that the company unfairly forced consumers to purchase new Apple Watch devices by discontinuing software support for older models prematurely. According to the complaint, Apple’s recent release of watchOS 27 is incompatible with several Apple Watch models, including the SE 2, Series 6, Series 7, Series 8, and Ultra 1.

The lawsuit claims these watches were sold in recent years and had not yet reached the end of their useful life as electronic devices. By ending software support, Apple allegedly rendered these watches obsolete, effectively ‘bricking’ them and compelling consumers to buy new ones. The discontinuation of updates is said to lead to increased software bugs, causing the devices to slow down or cease functioning.

Plaintiffs argue that Apple’s actions amount to unfair business practices, as the company did not inform consumers about the duration their devices would receive software updates. As a result, consumers may have paid more for the watches than they would have if they had known about the limited update eligibility, or they might not have purchased them at all.

The complaint seeks to represent individuals who bought the affected Apple Watch models. Plaintiffs are requesting damages, certification of the class action, and a jury trial, alleging breach of contract and violation of California’s Unfair Competition Law.
